Enjoy Your Summer Nights Without the Bites

If April showers bring May flowers, then those flowers bring June bugs. With the summer finally upon us, it’s the perfect time for outdoor barbeques, pool parties, and late night drinks on the porch. But with sunshine and warm weather comes a host of pests and bugs ready to litter us with annoying bites and stings. From pesky flies and ants to possibly dangerous ticks and mosquitoes, it’s important to stay safe while having fun with your friends and family.

In this post, we’ll go over some helpful and easy ways to keep the stingers and pests away, giving you more time to have fun in and out of your home.

Avoiding Mosquito Bites

Mosquitoes are some of the most annoying bugs to come out during the summer time. They breed easily in sitting pools of water and can be difficult to spot until it’s too late.

Worst of all, they too can carry diseases and spread them from person to person. You can deter mosquitoes based on what you wear. Try to avoid dark colored clothes or floral patterns, and don’t use sweet smelling perfumes or cologne.

Bug spray with a high amount of DEET also helps in this case.

On top of these measures, you can also decorate your home while repelling these pests. With tiki torches and scented candles, you can use their citronella scent to ward off mosquitoes from your home.

Mosquito Prevention

If you want to stop this menace from the source, it’s important to remove any standing water in and around your home. Mosquitoes only need a ½ in of standing water to breed, making it easy for them to find a hidden spot and continue to produce more bugs.

If you want to be more direct, you can keep some spots of standing water and place mosquito dunks in them. These tablets stay in the water and release a chemical that the larvae feed on, which kills them before they can fully mature.

Outside of finding these spots of water, you can also spread yard fog outside your home. This easily spreads across your yard to kill a large number of mosquitoes.

Freeing Your Home from Pesky Ants

While normally not as dangerous as ticks and mosquitoes, ants are possibly more annoying and definitely more difficult to remove from your home.

Their colonies can number in the thousands, and once they’ve set up a scent trail, it takes work to get rid of them.

Ant Prevention

To prevent these trails from forming in and around your home, it’s important to clean around your house often.

Make sure to pick up and properly dispose of any food, also cleaning all surfaces that might have crumbs or spices from the food.

You should also make sure there are not moist dark places in your home. Check for leaky pipes and regularly clean your bathrooms. Effective cleaning can also help to remove scene trails in the long run.

If you know where the ants normally gather, you'll want to use Terro Liquid Ant Baits. The liquid, which contains borax, is designed to attract worker ants who will consume it and bring it back to their colony. As it circulates through the colony, it kills the ants you see and the ones you don’t. Note: complete control may take up to two weeks.

To get the ants before they come into your house, you will will want to use a spray like Ortho Home Defense around the perimeter of your home to keep them from coming in. This non-staining and odor-free spray kills bugs inside and creates a bug barrier with up to 12-month control indoors for ants, roaches, spiders, ticks, and more home invading insects.

Avoiding Stings

Like mosquitoes and ants, wasps and hornets are warm-weather insects. They come out in the spring and beginning of summer and start building their nests. You will find these nests under roof eaves, doorways, window frames, and other outdoor areas.

To remove the nests, you will want to use a spray or spray foam like Ortho Home Defense Hornet & Wasp Killer, which reaches nests up to 20 feet above the ground! The foaming spray traps wasps and hornets inside the nest, providing rapid knockdown and kill. It's important to always treat wasps and hornets after dusk when they are all in the nest and less aggressive.

Their nests typically have one entrance at the bottom where hornets and wasps enter and exit. So, be sure not to stand underneath the nest as most wasp and hornet insecticides can cause the insects to drop instantly. And, wait 24 hours before removing the nest.
